She was commissioned in May of 1942 when most of the American Navy lay at the bottom of Pearl Harbor and with the shadow of German Fascism looming over Europe. By November of '42 the USS Massachusetts was seeing its first action in the battle of Casablanca as Allied forces moved into North Africa. She serves now as a quiet reminder of US military might and what America's "great generation" accomplished during those dark years.
